Box calls create turkey sounds with the friction created by sliding the lid across the surface of the box. These calls are very convenient and capable of producing more volume than any other call.

Friction Calls

Friction calls, also known as “peg and pot” type calls, are easy to use and create lifelike turkey sounds. Friction calls usually feature a round surface, and the hunter creates sound by drawing a peg or striker across the surface. Friction call surfaces can be slate, aluminum, glass or a variety of other materials.

Wingbone Calls

Wingbone calls originally were made from the wingbones of a turkey, and some still are. These are a suction-type calls. Sounds are made with quick, forceful sucking motions, much like kissing the end of the call. Good wingbone calls make a hollow sounding yelp. Several variations of the wingbone call have been made from materials such as cane, bone, horn and other hollow, slender materials.

Diaphragm Calls

Diaphragm calls use thin latex rubber as reed material. The reed material is held inside a horseshoe-shaped frame. The call is placed in your mouth with rounded side to the back and is pressed to the roof of the mouth with the tongue. Forcefully breathing across the reed causes the reed to vibrate and create sound, making the call sound. The calls require practice to learn to use correctly.

Tube Calls

Tube calls are similar to diaphragm calls. The reed material is fixed across top of a hollow barrel, instead of held in the mouth. Calls are typically made from plastic or wood, with latex stretched across the top half and held in place with a rubber band. The call is held against the lower lip and blown across to produce a wide range of calls.

Push/Pull Calls

Push-pull turkey calls are very simple to use, and create realistic turkey sounds. A wooden or plastic box incorporates a lid that rides on a rod positioned through both sides of the box. A spring or rubber-band is used to give the paddle proper tension to run over a peg inside. Pushing and/or pulling the rod causes the paddle to scrape over the internal peg, which vibrates to make turkey-like sounds.

We would love to hear from you about your experiences with turkey calls. What’s your favorite? What’s your least favorite? Which call gets the best results?

Its been a great first 3 days of the season for us,So far every client has been successful. With the addition of 7 new property this yr it’s helped us limited pressure and hunt new ground daily. The hunting should continue to get better daily with the hens going to nest and toms beginning to search for other hens that have yet to breed.Right now the keys to a successful hunt is scouting finding there strutt zones and being where the birds want to be.Most of the Toms at this point are sticking with there hens. Having success calling the birds in right now is very limited but will b changing over the next week or so !

Think girls don’t hunt? Think again!

For the first time in years, hunting license sales are on the up swing. This is thanks in large part to women hunters, who are taking the field in record numbers. The amount women spent on hunting license in 2009 was $70.6 million dollars. There has been a 36% increase in the number of women taking the field since 2001. So if your looking for a great place to take your wife, daughter, sister, mom or girlfriend, Pro Outfitters is the place for you!! We have been taking women hunters for years and welcome them in the lodge or field with us anytime!!

The pics of our women hunters speak for themselves. We love our women hunting and welcome many more in the future!!

Wild turkeys were reintroduced into Kansas in the 1960s, and the program has been a great success. Today, huntable populations of turkeys exist in nearly every county. The Rio Grande subspecies dominates the western two-thirds of the state. Low numbers in the southwest provide only limited hunting. Hybrid Rio Grande/Eastern birds are found in the north central region. The Eastern subspecies is common in the northeast and far southeast regions, where numbers have grown tremendously in recent years.

In my opinion one of the things we as hunters over look the most is fitness. We all focus on great equipment, having the right ground scouting the area but few take the extra time to be physically fit for the type of hunt there going on !! It wasn’t until abt 4 yrs ago that I really started to focus on being physically fit and in shape for the hunting season. For me I wanted to be able to give my clients the best hunt I could and being overweight I felt I wasn’t giving my clients the service they deserve ! I’m old school yes I have all the new toys the iPhones,Polaris rangers and every little device that gives me an advantage but when it comes to hunting I like to use my instincts and the two legs God gave me ! For us we only use our Polaris rangers to recover our game and get it from the field to the lodge ! No matter the conditions snowy, rainy or muddy every client walks to and from the stand !! I’m a scent freak and I don’t want anything unnatural or anything the deer aren’t use to hearing in the woods to spook them !! So for all our clients you need to be in decent shape to hunt with us ! I’m not much for lazy people or lazy hunters. If you want that big buck your gotta earn it by walking ! The benefits of being physically fit goes farther than just being able to walk to the stand ! The better the shape your in, the more alert you will be in the stand and the more endurance you will have to ride that stand all day during the rut !! Some of the draw back to be overweight is your going to sweat more , there’s a chance you won’t be able to fit in a stand and be limited to hunting a few select spots !! If your willing to spend your hard earned
money on an expensive hunt you should be wiling to go the extra mile and be physically fit to go on the hunt ! To be honest hunters that are over weight and out of shape are a liability to outfitters and decrease your chances of success ! It’s no secret these days when you watch outdoor tv all the big names are physically fit. Being fit is a great invest for your next hunt and also a great investment for your future hunts !! Being physically fit doesn’t mean killing yourself trying to be the next Tony Horton author of P90X. It’s simple, start small just 30 minutes aday of walking is a great way to get started ! Success breeds success you will find that the success you have during the off season will help You become a better hunter this fall and increase your chances of success !!
